Gorgeous Guide: We Tried It-Lash Tinting

Back in the late '90s, when most of us were still trying to shake off the flannel shirts and lower-maintenance looks of the "grunge" era, Mary Tujaka of CC Salon and Spa in Westlake was performing her first lash tints.

Ten years later, she's an old pro, while the girls in the office are just starting to buzz about the procedure. Who better to go to for my first experience?

The lash tint took about 10 minutes, and can last from four to six weeks. For the next two months, I don't have to worry about raccoon eyes, clumpy mascara or reapplying.

Tujaka applied black vegetable dye (much safer than the old ammonia-based hair dyes) to my top and bottom lashes with a disposable mascara brush, and they're noticeably darker now. She knows how to give a great, relaxing lash tint: dimmed lighting, Zen music and a personal, trustworthy demeanor.

After 20 years of service in their North Olmsted location on Clague Road, CC Salon & Spa, a full service salon specializing in hair, nails, skin and body rejuvenation services and products, has relocated to an expanded facility at Crossings Village in Westlake - 1650 Crossings Parkway, Unit A. Statistics say less than five percent of independently owned businesses make it to the twenty-year milestone without closing or selling. CC owner Shelly Mongello, a Westlake resident who opened the salon in 1984, attributes her landmark achievement to determination, entrepreneurial drive and artistic vision. She also credits her success to the experience and longevity of her staff, the salon's emphasis on integrity and flexibility, and their fervent commitment to client service. The outcome is a very loyal customer base that has grown remarkably through referrals during the last two decades. Mongello adds that her relocation to Westlake is a natural progression in the growth of her business and the company's objective to reach new markets. "We want the CC experience to always be about our customers, so that together, we continue to evolve," she says.

Penchant For Pampering Prompts Spa Expansions

Two Cleveland-area spas are offering proof that, despite a sluggish economy, spending bundles on facials, manicures and massages has never been more popular. Chardonnay's, a Concord salon and spa, has grown in little more than a year from a husband-and-wife startup to a business on a hiring spree. "Baby boomers are getting to that age where they are thinking about taking care of themselves," said Chardonnay's president and co-owner Heather Janesz, who opened the spa last April with her husband, Robert. "And, yes, the men - the 'metrosexuals' - are more aware," she said. "It's becoming mainstream for men to pamper themselves, too." The 30-employee spa plans to add as many as 50 technicians and stylists between now and November. Mrs. Janesz said the hires would allow Chardonnay's to keep hours on Mondays and convert unused space into new work stations. Growth has been admittedly slower but nonetheless has been rewarding for Shelly Mongello, whose CC Salon & Spa opened with just the salon 20 years ago at the corner of Clague and Lorain roads in North Olmsted. In 1999, picking up on the pampering craze, Ms. Mongello added a day spa to the store. Last month, after searching for a better location, she moved the business to Westlake. At 2,400 square feet, the new store isn't much larger, but Ms. Mongello likes the neighborhood - it's across the street from the soon-to-open Crocker Park lifestyle center - and she finds it homier than her previous digs. "It's not such a sterile environment here," she said.
